About Us

Our Story

Welcome to The Orchard and Biggar Flavour – our family run businesses, found in the centre of Biggar’s High Street.

The Orchard has been part of the family since 2007, as Ranald decided when the traditional greengrocers became available that it was time for a change from his career in agriculture. Over the last decade the business has evolved to have more of a delicatessen feel, as we have gradually increased the range of fine foods that we stock – sourcing many of our products from small, independent producers.

Throughout our journey, we have always jested about the need for elastic walls, to make space for our ever-expanding product range. So, when the opportunity to take on the neighbouring bakery premises arose in 2011, we snapped it up – allowing us to open “Biggar Flavour”. We saw this as a fantastic opportunity to expand our business, in a manner that complimented what we were already doing with our range of Biggar Flavour Preserves; whilst giving us much needed shop space for products not readily available in Biggar. Jane has since stepped away from her career in pharmacy to focus on our business.

We closed the retail bakery at the end of June 2019 but have continued to bake behind the scenes in the kitchen, producing the same range of cakes, breads, scones, quiches and chilled soups, which are now available in The Orchard. We have also added a range of packed oatcakes and shortbread for inclusion in our hampers.

Our ethos is to provide you with a wide range of high quality produce and excellent customer service. We are passionate about food – including both the produce we make and the raw ingredients we source to allow you to get creative in the kitchen. Everything we produce is made from scratch using high quality ingredients and we endeavour to cater for a range of dietary requirements.

We also strive to achieve excellent customer service and are incredibly grateful of our wonderful team of staff. In the Orchard Hazel, Liz, May and Elaine provide friendly personal service; while Malcolm undertakes our deliveries come rain, snow or shine. In Biggar Flavour Jane and Hazel work behind the scenes to produce all the tempting treats we have available in The Orchard. We are always happy to try to source or answer questions about ingredients

Our Town

Biggar is a small Lanarkshire town, which you can reach within one hour from Edinburgh or Glasgow. The town boasts a wide range of award winning, independently owned businesses including: grocers, restaurants and boutique shops. Biggar also has a rich history which can be explored in the town’s museums; and you should be sure to visit the Cadger’s Brig from which, it is told that, William Wallace spied upon the English Army.

Nestled within the southern uplands, Biggar comes into view while climbing Tinto, Culter Fell or the Broughton Heights; and is a convenient stop for some refreshment during a day of rambling.

Biggar is also perfect for a Family day out: home to “Pips and Panda” – which regularly put on a show at the Puppet theatre. There are also two parks – the Burn Braes and Public Park – which are ideal for picnics; and provide lots of fun whether you have children or are just a big kid yourself.

The town is also host to a number of annual events including Vintage Car Rallies, the Biggar Agricultural Show and the Biggar Gala Day. In October each year, The Biggar Little Festival showcases both local and national talents; offering a wide range of events featuring music, drama, comedy, literature, arts and crafts.

Biggar is also one of the best places in Scotland to “bring in the bells” on Hogmanay, with the annual bonfire taking place in the town centre. The enormous pile of wood can be seen accumulating from the beginning of December.

Whether visiting for the day or a short break, you’ll find plenty of ways to fill your time – let us at The Orchard & Biggar Flavour fill your bellies!
